{"id":4474,"date":"2023-10-01T21:36:28","date_gmt":"2023-10-01T21:36:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nayrb.org\/~blog\/?p=4474"},"modified":"2023-10-02T03:01:08","modified_gmt":"2023-10-02T03:01:08","slug":"truth-and-reconciliation-some-resources-art-readings-and-teaching-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nayrb.org\/~blog\/2023\/10\/01\/truth-and-reconciliation-some-resources-art-readings-and-teaching-materials\/","title":{"rendered":"Truth and Reconciliation: Some Resources, Art, Readings, and Teaching Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday September 30th was the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Day_for_Truth_and_Reconciliation\">National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As with <a href=\"http:\/\/nayrb.org\/~blog\/2020\/06\/07\/dont-listen-to-me-listen-to-people-who-have-lived-this-experience\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other issues<\/a>, there are a lot of words that I could say about this, but you shouldn&#8217;t be listening to me.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, if you want to understand the issues better, I recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/nctr.ca\/records\/reports\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports produced by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission and National Center continue to produce reports in an ongoing way.  They have prioritized what they think you should read first, along with the 2015 reports that include a comprehensive history as well as specific calls to action.<\/p>\n<p>You may be interested in First Nations art across various media.  I would encourage you to do your own research, but I would put forward the following:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentmonkman.com\/biography\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kent Monkman is an interdisciplinary Cree visual artist<\/a>.  His paintings and installations are thought-provoking, and helped me see Canadian institutions (such as the RCMP) in a very different way.  His most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rom.on.ca\/en\/exhibitions-galleries\/exhibitions\/kent-monkman-being-legendary\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">installation at the ROM<\/a> was gut-wrenching and thoughtful and so much more.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for music, you might be interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/thehallucination.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Halluci Nation<\/a> (formerly A Tribe Called Red) (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Halluci_Nation\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wikipedia link<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a book, you might be interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deaddogcafe.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas King<\/a>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_King_(novelist)\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wikipedia link<\/a>), or perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Horse\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indian Horse<\/a> (also a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_Horse_(film)\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">film<\/a>) by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Wagamese\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Wagamese<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Toronto Public Library has also a <a href=\"https:\/\/torontopubliclibrary.typepad.com\/programming\/2023\/09\/national-day-for-truth-and-reconciliation-september-30-2023.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">list of recommended resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a teacher (or want to learn more), the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation has a <a href=\"https:\/\/nctr.ca\/education\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Teaching Resource collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday September 30th was the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada.
