{"id":1416,"date":"2016-04-08T11:58:07","date_gmt":"2016-04-08T11:58:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nayrb.org\/~blog\/?p=1416"},"modified":"2016-04-08T03:01:21","modified_gmt":"2016-04-08T03:01:21","slug":"tng-the-power-of-adversaries-season-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nayrb.org\/~blog\/2016\/04\/08\/tng-the-power-of-adversaries-season-6\/","title":{"rendered":"TNG: The Power of Adversaries, Season 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In our <a href=\"http:\/\/nayrb.org\/~blog\/2016\/03\/31\/tng-the-power-of-adversaries-seasons-1-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/nayrb.org\/~blog\/2016\/04\/04\/tng-the-power-of-adversaries-seasons-4-5\/\" target=\"_blank\">installments<\/a>, we talked about seasons 1-5 of TNG, and the relative power of the various adversaries our intrepid heroes faced.<\/p>\n<p>As before, I defined \u2018high-powered\u2019 challenges as those where firing phasers would only make the problem worse, so the crew must needs turn to guile. \u2018Equal-powered\u2019 challenges are those situations where firing phasers would lead to a toss-up. \u2018Low-powered\u2019 challenges are those where phasers or transporters would solve the problem handily[3]. \u2018Self-powered\u2019 challenges are those where the conflict is inside the crew, or between crew members, or between all or part of the crew and Starfleet. <\/p>\n<p>S6: 2-102220-10-12101-1-120-1-1201-122 <\/p>\n<p>High: 9<br \/>\nEqual: 3<br \/>\nLow: 6<br \/>\nSelf: 8<\/p>\n<p>Season six continues the seasons four and five trend of adversaries being much more powerful than the crew, or being the crew themselves, culminating in the <a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Descent_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">season finale of Data and Lore teaming up with the Borg<\/a>.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Ship_in_a_Bottle_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">Holodeck Moriarty also returns<\/a> (&#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Sherlock_Holmes_Program_3A\" target=\"_blank\">capable of beating Data<\/a>&#8216;), and <a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Relics_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">Scotty helps them escape a Dyson Sphere<\/a> (!).<\/p>\n<p>We also have a <a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Chain_of_Command,_Part_I_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">more in-depth<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Chain_of_Command,_Part_II_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">introduction to the Cardassians<\/a> &#8216;There are Four Lights!&#8217;, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/The_Quality_of_Life_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">new robotic species<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>In another more powerful\/self combo, Q helps us tell <a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Tapestry_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">the story of Picard&#8217;s artificial heart<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But my favourite, and one of the most moving of the series, is the <a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Ancient_humanoid\" target=\"_blank\">message from the &#8216;Ancient Humanoids&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Judging by the number of episodes I&#8217;ve mentioned here, I feel like season six was where a lot of things came together for the show, or maybe it was the last season I really watched.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In our previous installments, we talked about seasons 1-5 of TNG, and the relative power of the various adversaries our intrepid heroes faced.
