{"id":1385,"date":"2016-04-04T11:35:51","date_gmt":"2016-04-04T11:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nayrb.org\/~blog\/?p=1385"},"modified":"2016-04-04T03:36:06","modified_gmt":"2016-04-04T03:36:06","slug":"tng-the-power-of-adversaries-seasons-4-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nayrb.org\/~blog\/2016\/04\/04\/tng-the-power-of-adversaries-seasons-4-5\/","title":{"rendered":"TNG: The Power of Adversaries, Seasons 4-5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Continuing from where we left off <a href=\"http:\/\/nayrb.org\/~blog\/2016\/03\/31\/tng-the-power-of-adversaries-seasons-1-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">talking about TNG: Seasons 1-3<\/a>, here are the stats for the power levels of the crew&#8217;s adversaries in Seasons four and five.<\/p>\n<p>As before, I defined \u2018high-powered\u2019 challenges as those where firing phasers would only make the problem worse, so the crew must needs turn to guile. \u2018Equal-powered\u2019 challenges are those situations where firing phasers would lead to a toss-up. \u2018Low-powered\u2019 challenges are those where phasers or transporters would solve the problem handily[3]. \u2018Self-powered\u2019 challenges are those where the conflict is inside the crew, or between crew members, or between all or part of the crew and Starfleet. <\/p>\n<p>Seasons four and five seem to be exploring alternately how the crew deals with very strong external adversaries and wrestling with themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Season Four (26 episodes): 2-120202-1221112022-122-10-11-12<br \/>\nHigh:  12<br \/>\nEqual:  4<br \/>\nLow:    4<br \/>\nSelf:   6<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/The_Best_of_Both_Worlds,_Part_II_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">The Best of Both Worlds (part II)<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Family_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">Family<\/a>&#8221; are probably the best example of this.<\/p>\n<p>Or you could look at &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Night_Terrors_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">Night Terrors<\/a>&#8221; (&#8216;One moon circles.&#8217;, still the best metaphor for Hydrogen I&#8217;ve seen) and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/The_Drumhead_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">The Drumhead<\/a>&#8221; as (for me) two other good examples.<\/p>\n<p>Another example which marries the two is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Remember_Me_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">Remember Me<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Season Five (26 episodes): 21122-1110-1-10002-102-1-1-12-12-12<br \/>\nHigh:   8<br \/>\nEqual:  4<br \/>\nLow:    5<br \/>\nSelf:   9<\/p>\n<p>Season five&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/The_Game_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">The Game<\/a>&#8221; is a good example of an episode which is difficult to categorize between &#8216;high-powered adversary&#8217; and &#8216;self-adversary&#8217;.  To me, the episode is really about the crew struggling with themselves and an addiction.  Else, you could see it as them struggling against magic mind-controlling aliens.  <\/p>\n<p>However, changing this wouldn&#8217;t really change the overall stats for the season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/Conundrum_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">Conundrum<\/a>&#8221; contains the line which was the inspiration for this series of posts: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.st-minutiae.com\/resources\/scripts\/214.txt\" target=\"_blank\">One photon torpedo would have ended their war.<\/a>&#8221;  It had some excellent moments talking about the ethical use of power, I think a hallmark of TNG (and much of Star Trek).<\/p>\n<p>Any conversation about season five would be incomplete without mentioning &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/memory-alpha.wikia.com\/wiki\/The_Inner_Light_%28episode%29\" target=\"_blank\">The Inner Light<\/a>&#8220;, perhaps discussing some similar issues to &#8220;Remember Me&#8221; above.  For me, &#8220;The Inner Light&#8221; was the most poignant, for the way it portrayed memory and loss, nostalgia and time passing.
